Devall Travels

Today we went to the Flamingo Gardens in nearby Davie.  We have been a couple of times before and it always a good half day checking out the animals and birds. Glade and human friend Animals like Glade. A four year old alligator that came to the gardens after being rescued. Along with many others he was part of an egg theft and kept in a Tupperware and us far too small for his age. Others are generally rescues and brought in by the public. Even the black bear! Such a peafowl. And then back to the apartment via my usual visit to Walmart for Fruit of the Loom underpants. Sadly Hanes have taken over and no FotL to be seen in briefs!! So bought only one packet of Hanes. End of an era. I watched Tottenham beat Man City in the Champions League semi final. Bah! And Claire had a doze.  Dinner...

Today my aching foot seemed a little better. The swelling gone down a little. So as I was walking wounded we decided to go to a wildlife rescue centre in Davie FL that we last went to when we were staying in nearby Weston. TomTom said 39 minutes and 23 miles. He was probably right but it seemed much much longer. Traffic and traffic lights. The park has some areas that were hit by the hurricanes and so parts are closed. The rest rooms by the aviary had the roof stoved in by falling bits of tree. Luckily none of the animals and birds were hurt. http://www.flamingogardens.org Of course there are flamingos. There are what seems like hundreds of Florida White Ibis. Everywhere you go. There they are. The highlight for us was the new home of the Florida River Otters. They are all there because they have been injured in some way. They breed and the young are then released into the wild. They are so quick getting a photo is difficult. Started off as a quiet day after the drive yesterday. Getting used to driving here should be easier than in France or Spain, but strangely, even with signs almost in a version of English I ought to understand, it is way harder!!! Today we chose to go the an animal park in Davie. Flamingo Gardens is a not for profit park,  where most of the animals and birds are rescued and are nursed back to health or given a lifetime place to live if they are too unfit to be released back into the wild. A couple of inhabitants are Josh. A tame black bear used for parties and education who now lives in the park. And Elvis. A ten feet long alligator that was rescued from a private home!! He was being kept as a house pet. Why would anyone want Elvis living in their house? There are many species of birds on site, many injured and not able to survive in the wild. Plus bob cats, otters and of course the flamingoes. We had a great time.
